Here at South Florida Donation Center, we recognize the importance of our jewish heritage and do what we can to uphold it on a daily basis. As one of the largest donation centers in South Florida, Tzedakah plays a large role in our mission and what we stand for. Jewish members of our South Florida community understand today that Tzedakah is the concept of giving back and helping our community members, but what does Tzedakah actually stand for? Where does the concept of Tzedakah come from? As members of South Florida’s Jewish community, it’s important that we share and understand Tzedakah, the whole reason why South Florida Donation Center exists in the first place.
The Definition Of Tzedakah
As a baseline, it’s essential to understand the definition of Tzedakah. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “(among Jewish people) charitable giving, typically seen as a moral obligation.” Since the early days of post-Biblical Judaism, Jewish people have made it an essential part of their culture to give back and help those in our communities to the best of our abilities.
The History of Tzedakah
The concept of “Tzedakah” dates back to post- biblical Judaism, where the Bible makes it a point to show concern for the less fortunate and help them in any way possible. Farmers were called upon to leave aside crops from their harvest so those who were landless could eat. Rabbinic Judaism paved the way for the concept of social welfare systems, built on individual and shared responsibility for our neighbors. Larger communities would create special centers to care for the ill and feeble, bury the dead, assist newlyweds, and house travelers on their journey.
